Essential Vitamins & Oils

Jojoba Seed Oil: Jojoba oil is produced in the seed of the jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) plant, a shrub native to southern Arizona, southern California and northwestern Mexico. Jojoba oil has been commonly used is to treat and repair nails. It is indicated to treat splitting or peeling nails or nails with vertical ridges. Vertical nail separation or splitting indicates a lack of moisture or body oils in the nails. Topical application of Jojoba oil to the nail plate and cuticle penetrates and softens the nail making it more supple and less likely to crack. In addition, Jojoba oil helps clear a path for the Tolnaftate to penetrate into the skin and nails and for the absorption of Vitamin E's in order to conditioning of nails. Jojoba oil has also been shown to not only soften the nail plate to allow more penetration, but it also has been shown to include antifungal properties of its own.

Sunflower Seed Oil: Sunflower oil is the oil expressed from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seeds. Sunflower oil is commonly used in cosmetic formulations as an emollient. (Emollients are substances that soften and soothe the skin and nails. They are used to correct dryness and scaling of the skin and nails.) Sunflower seed oil is used in many beauty products for nails and cuticles. Sunflower oil is high in vitamin E. Vitamin E is clinically proven to be a protective and strengthening element for nails.

Sesame Seed Oil: Sesame oil is a vegetable oil derived from sesame seeds. Sesame oil penetrates the skin and nails easily, and is used in oil for massage, especially to penetrate the hard skin of the foot. Sesame seed oil facilitates the penetration of Tolnaftate into the hard nail plate. Sesame oil is also a good source of vitamin E. Vitamin E is clinically proven to be a protective and strengthening element for nails. As with most plant based oils, sesame oil contains magnesium, copper, calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamin B6. Many beauty products for nails contain sesame seed oil and report that a regular regimen of sesame oil for damaged nails will strengthen and revitalize them.

Vitamin E: (tocopherols and tocotrienols) Vitamin E, in a topical liquid form, can help correct certain nail-growth disorders and problems. Vitamin E has been particularly used for a condition called ‘yellow nail’. In this condition, nail growth takes on a yellowish, thickened appearance. Vitamin E is considered to be especially useful in helping nails and hair to grow and flourish. The molecular structure of Vitamin E is too large to penetrate the nail plate layers or the surface layer of the skin alone, without the benefits of Jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is a very tiny molecule which can penetrate the nail plate surface, open up the layers and draw the Vitamin E in after it.

Sweet Almond Oil: Almond oil is extracted from the almond (Prunus dulcis) species of tree native to the Middle East and South Asia. There are two forms of the plant, one (often with white flowers) producing sweet almonds, and the other (often with pink flowers) producing bitter almonds. Sweet almond oil is obtained from the dried kernel of sweet almonds. The oil is good for application to the skin and nails as an emollient, and has been traditionally used by massage therapists to lubricate the skin during a massage session. (Emollients are substances that soften and soothe the skin and nail. They are used to correct dryness and scaling of the nail.) Almond oil quickly absorbs into the nail plate and nail bed after topical application. Sweet almond oil provides essential fatty acids that help repair the moisture barrier of skin and nails thus helping to restore moisture, smoothness and suppleness. Almond oil contains high levels of Vitamin E. It also contains Vitamin A, an important nutrient for skin and nail health, as well as Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B6. Almond oil also contains the mineral zinc, which is important for healing in the nail bed. Zinc is involved in protein metabolism in the body, which means it also helps to renew skin and nails.
